E-20 petrol is a mix of 20% ethanol and 80% regular petrol. E-20 is not simply conventional petrol with ethanol added at the retail outlet. It is a specified fuel blend that must satisfy the applicable quality requirements throughout the supply and distribution chain.

India’s E20 programme is part of the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, which seeks to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, improve energy security, provide an additional market for agricultural products and reduce the carbon intensity of road transport.

The Government has stated that the E20 rollout has been supported by laboratory testing, vehicle trials and consultations involving organisations including ARAI, SIAM, IOCL, IIP, automobile manufacturers and component manufacturers.
