Govt Hikes LPG Prices After Invoking Emergency Powers to Boost Output
The Government of India has increased LPG cylinder prices shortly after invoking emergency powers to strengthen domestic supply. The move comes amid concerns over tightening global LPG availability and rising import costs.
To prevent shortages, the government directed refiners to maximize LPG production and divert propane and butaneโtypically used in petrochemicalsโtowards cooking gas supply. India imports nearly two-thirds of its LPG requirement, making it vulnerable to global supply disruptions, particularly from the Middle East.
While the price hike adds to consumer costs, the measure aims to ensure stable LPG availability for households and reduce financial pressure on oil marketing companies during a period of global energy market uncertainty.
